IDNs will allow anyone to type in a domain name in their mother tongue. INDs are domain names with non-ASCII characters. Therefore someone living in Cairo can type in Arabic and someone living in Moscow can type in Russian. International Domain Names (IDN) have been available for several years however the lack of browser support has been one of the biggest obstacles. With the impending release of IE7 which offers IDN support and the continued increase in diffusion of Firefox (which supports IDNs) the growth and acceptance of IDNs seem very likely. Language such as Chinese, Japanese, and Thai are all supported along with right to left languages such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Farsi/Persian. With over 1.3 billion people in the world that speak chinese, 270 million that speak arabic, and 127 million that speak Japanese it would seem that IDNs are set to make a large impression.
